Algarrobo
Algarrobo Pueblo is a picturesque white-washed village located in the Axarquía region of Málaga province, Andalusia, Spain. Situated approximately 32 kilometers east of Málaga city and about 3.5 kilometers inland from the Mediterranean coast, the village is perched at an elevation of 86 meters above sea level. The name “Algarrobo” translates to “carob tree” in Spanish, reflecting the area’s historical abundance of these trees.
Historical Background
The origins of Algarrobo Pueblo trace back to prehistoric times, with evidence of human settlement during the Paleolithic era. Significant archaeological findings from the Bronze Age have been discovered at the Morro de Mezquitilla site, indicating early habitation. However, the most notable historical influence comes from the Phoenicians, who established the Trayamar Necropolis in the area. This necropolis, dating back to the 7th century BC, is considered one of the most important Phoenician archaeological sites in the western Mediterranean. Artifacts from these excavations are housed in the Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Málaga.
During the Moorish period, the village was known as “Garrobo” and experienced significant development. The Moors introduced advanced agricultural practices, cultivating almonds, raisins, and silk, which contributed to the area’s economic prosperity. The village’s narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses are reminiscent of its Moorish heritage. Following the Reconquista in 1487, the village was renamed Algarrobo.
The municipality of Algarrobo encompasses four distinct areas:
- Algarrobo Pueblo: The main inland village characterized by its traditional Andalusian architecture and historic charm.
- Algarrobo Costa: The coastal counterpart, approximately 3.5 kilometers south of the Pueblo, known for its modern tourist infrastructure, beaches, and promenade.
- Mezquitilla: A coastal hamlet situated to the east, notable for its archaeological significance and serene environment.
- Trayamar: An inland area recognized for the Trayamar Necropolis and its archaeological importance.
This division allows residents and visitors to experience both the tranquil, historic ambiance of the inland village and the vibrant, seaside atmosphere of the coastal areas.
Cultural and Architectural Highlights
Algarrobo Pueblo boasts several notable landmarks:
- Church of Santa Ana: Constructed in the 17th century, this church is a fine example of traditional Andalusian religious architecture. Its bell tower is particularly noteworthy.
- Ermita de San Sebastián: A hermitage dating back to the 17th or 18th century, located at the highest point of the town. It was rebuilt in 1976 due to structural concerns but retains its historical significance.
- Ermita de las Angustias: Situated at the northern exit of Algarrobo, this hermitage holds sentimental value for locals, often visited during significant life events.
Economy and Local Products
Historically, Algarrobo’s economy was rooted in agriculture, with the Moors introducing crops such as almonds, raisins, and silk production. In contemporary times, while agriculture remains significant, tourism has become a vital component of the local economy, especially in Algarrobo Costa. The village is also renowned for its “Tortas de Algarrobo,” a traditional cake of Arabic origin that continues to be a local delicacy.

As of recent data, the municipality of Algarrobo has a population of approximately 6,000 residents. The population is distributed among the four areas: Algarrobo Pueblo, Algarrobo Costa, Mezquitilla, and Trayamar. While specific census figures detailing the population distribution among these areas and the percentage of overseas residents are not readily available, the region has seen an influx of international residents in recent years, contributing to its cultural diversity.
